ObjectiveTo gauge the effectiveness of leading safety lancets among patients requiring blood glucose testing by evaluating ease of use, the activation process, patient pain, cutaneous damage and product preference.
Three safety lancet brands were used for blood glucose testing by 11 nurses over the course of four weeks. Three leading safety lancets in the European market were evaluated on a randomized group of patients.
SurgiLance® safety lancets were preferred over two competitors for their ease of use. The breadth of the SurgiLance® product line offered significant advantages in terms of decreased patient pain and decreased cutaneous damage. No significant differences were found among the three varieties tested when evaluating risk of contamination, labeling and packaging. A full 75% of those tested with all three lancets preferred the SurgiLance® safety lancet over leading competitor products.
A total of 89% of nurses found SurgiLance® safety lancets easy or very easy to use, 66% found Competitor A lancets easy or very easy to use, and 36% found Competitor B lancets easy or very easy to use. While no patients considered SurgiLance® safety lancets difficult to use, nearly a third (27%) found Competitor B’s product difficult to use and 17% found the Competitor A’s product difficult to use.
The absence of a pre-arming requirement for the SurgiLance® safety lancet led an overwhelming 94% of users to consider it easy or very easy to use in terms of activation. Only 67% found Competitor A’s product easy or very easy to use in this regard, and just 46% found the Competitor B’s product easy or very easy to use when considering the activation mechanism.
A total of 44% experienced no pain when using SurgiLance® safety lancets, while 17% experienced no pain with Competitor A’s product and 9% found Competitor B’s product to be pain-free.
The evaluation showed a decrease of cutaneous damage with 31% who used SurgiLance® safety lancets, a decrease of 11% among those who used Competitor B’s product, and an increase of cutaneous damage for 10% of those who used Competitor A’s product.
“Our preference for blood sampling is to use SurgiLance® safety lancets from MediPurpose. For blood glucose testing in particular, Nevers Hospital will use the SLN100 SurgiLance® safety lancet. Like all SurgiLance® safety lancets, the SLN100 is easy to use. In addition, it causes less pain and results in a decrease of cutaneous damage for our patients. For those patients who have digital hyperkeratosis, the SurgiLance® SLN200 will be the safety lancet of choice.”
